Agricultural /Farm Sector Minimum Wages 1 Jan 2019 to 28 Feb 2019

From 1 Jan 2019 until such time that the Dept of Labour releases new sectoral wages, the national min wage of R18 per hour is applicable to Farm or Agricultural employees.

Farmers will have to put on their thinking caps and start planning towards absorbing this increase to wage bill. You are welcome to contact us.

Made under Basic Conditions of Employment Act 75 of 1997, sectoral determination 13 came into force on 1 March 2006 as published in notice R149 of Government Gazette 28518 dated 17 February 2006, annually the determination has been adjusted in terms of min wage rates.

It applies to the employment of farm workers in all farming activities including:

•    primary and secondary agriculture;
•    mixed farming;
•    horticulture;
•    aqua farming; and
•    the farming of animal products or field crops.

Sectoral determination 13 excludes the forestry sector but includes:

•    a domestic worker employed in a home on a farm; and
•    a security guard employed to guard a farm or other premises where farming activities are conducted, who is not employed in the private security industry.

It does not apply to any person employed in activities covered by another sectoral determination or by a bargaining council agreement.
